Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/_mimiriam/ ♡

  1. I kept it on because i thought it was a cute detail and my pins are so blunt i have to force them into fabric THANK YOU FOR THIS!!!!! On my way to stab some pins 😂

  2. For my cat to use to yank my pin cushion off my work table. 🤣
I haven't seen one with real Emory in it for decades. I find them full of saw dust. 😕

  3. I don't think that's true about the tin foil though? That's not how sharpening works, it might clean the blade, but it's not being actually sharpened. I believe there are services for that if you don't want to buy a whole new scissors.

  4. oh neat, i always just used it to keep my needles separate from the pins (also since its smaller i wouldn't risk them getting pushed in too far and getting lost lol)

  5. If you read the biography of Abagail Adams, you’ll recall how valuable pins and needles were back in early America.
Though they’re quite inexpensive today, they were once in short supply – which is why we might not think of sharpening them.
If you invest in good quality European-made needles, however, this is important information.
    Thanks!!!

  6. Huh! Never knew that's what they were for! Every single one I've encountered in my life has had it cut off… but I've seen them attached at some point…awesome fun fact!

  7. Glad to see young people sharing traditional skills. I worked with several young people who could not put a button on or sew a hem. Yikes😮

  8. Cutting foil didn’t work on my scissors—but the foil was aluminum, not tin.

I wouldn’t expect aluminum foil to do much if the scissors were dull. Scissors are made of steel, which is much harder than aluminum.

If the scissors were recently sharpened, then cutting foil might be enough to re-hone the wire edges. It wouldn’t be enough to actually re-sharpen, though.

  9. Odd, I never thought of it as a strawberry and simply figured it was a pepper instead. They're both nightshade and growing companions
Strawberry and tomato make much less sense. There's got to be an excellent explanation.

  10. THIS was the pin cushion my aunt told me about! So it's called emery sand, tysm, now I know. If I'm gonna make my own strawberry cushion, which grit should I use?

  11. You can also sharpen scissors by 'cutting' the neck of a plain glass bottle. Glass is slightly abrasive at this scale and it will put an edge on your scissor blades in an emergency.

  12. My grandmother made her own pincushions out of a canning jar lid and ring with a fabric cushion filled with sand. It does keep pins and needles sharp. I have looked for a pattern or tutorial for making this type since mine is more than 60 years old and the fabric is starting to disintegrate from all the pin holes. I don’t want to pull it apart to figure out how to make a new one, but I think that’s my only option 😢
