I made this cheap wig INDESTRUCTIBLE

This video is brought to you by Squarespace. This misshapen, tangled, shiny character wig is about to turn into a completely tangle resistant pigtail parted, still kind of shiny wig. But I could throw this thing across the room and it still wouldn’t tangle. So this is how I did it.

So I don’t normally buy character wigs, but I kind of had to for this Arda wigs is like completely sold out of any wigs that are white or silver or gray. So this was sort of my only choice. And what I’ve ended up with is your classic cosplay pigtail wig,

Where it is a base wig that doesn’t have a pigtail back And two pigtails that are already tangling. They were too long for Frieren and they’re too thick for Frieren And I want to make this an indestructible pigtail wig.

I want to be able to take this wig and throw it into a suitcase with no wig head in it. Ill get to the pigtails later. now, I want to talk about how I’m going to try to make an indestructible, pigtail base wig. I have done a couple

Pigtail backed wigs before, I did them more in the traditional way. Where you so extra wefts of hair into the back part and then just bring them into a pigtail. That works fine. But they’re not indestructible. you kind of have to keep them on a wig head for them to keep their shape.

So instead, I’m going to try to make a really sturdy base And for that, I’m going to try out a material I haven’t worked with before. So this is fossshape. It kind of just looks like it’s felt, but it’s not. It actually has thermoplastic inside of it.

So when you heat it up, it gets really hard and really stiff. then the cool thing is before you heat it up, you can sew through it and you can still kind of sew through it after you heat it up force shape is kind of expensive.

You can also just do this and felt this is the mock up I made and felt. it has also become stuffing for the fossshape because this wig head is almost the same size of my head, but it’s like a little bit smaller. And because this gets so rigid and shrinks a little bit,

I needed something to pad out this wig head so that it actually fits my head. Anyway. I have my pattern. And I’m pretty sure you just so it like you just sew it like anything else? Yeah, it’s really sick, and my machine went through it. Fine.

But if you don’t have a machine that can sew through ten mm eva foam, you might have some trouble and you might want to use something like a walking foot or they do make thinner face shape. You could just get the thinner facial shape. now I have this.

If lets see if it’ll actually even, like, sit on my head. yeah, we’re good. It fits on my head. It feels like it’s, like, slightly too big, too, which is good, because when I heat it up, it’s going to shrink.

Fits over the wig head But I’m not going to heat it up yet because there’s two things I know for sure. I want to get sewn onto this before it’s hardened. the first thing requires a little bit of explanation.

So if you have no idea what this thing is, This is a wig grip. it’s just a piece of velvet that you put on your head like a headband on top, your wig cap and it really, really works to help keep a wig on your head.

It doesn’t work for super duper heavy wigs, but for a regular wig. For a wig of this size, this should be enough to keep the wig on my head. the way it works is actually just surface tension. So the pile of the velvet is facing

In the opposite direction that the wig would slip back. So I thought, what if I double that security? what if I take another piece of velvet face? The pile, the opposite direction is this one. And so a little piece of velvet right here in the front. So then it’s double surface tension.

It won’t match the color, but this is some leftover stretch velvet from Snow Miku So first I want to make sure I know which way the pile is going and this is going this way. So I’m going to cut a strip where the pile is going, like the short way of the piece

I’m cutting and I’m just going to cut it about the size of this front piece of this thing. And I’m not even going to finish these edges because this velvet doesn’t really fray enough to warrant doing that to a thing that no one’s ever going to see.

So if I take this and I put it on here and I put it that way, I can feel some resistance. But if I turn it the other way, it slides right back. So I know this needs to go this way.

So to make sure I do it right, I’m gonna put it on my head. I’m going to take this and put it on my head and take it off that way. So now I just got to take this and I’m just going to top stitch it in there.

It’s not going to look pretty, but it just has to function. So let me make sure this works. Yep. It’s gripping. and the second thing I want to add before we heat shape it, is I want to add some cotton batting to the back of it.

But I need to figure out where that needs to go and what shape that needs to be. So I’m going to cut one piece of cotton batting out of this shape, and then I’m going to make this smaller and cut another one and then maybe do one more.

So it’s like really poofy right there where the pigtail comes together, but then gets smaller as it goes out to the pigtail, And I’m probably going to hand sew all that on. I got all that sewn together and I have it pinned on. But I think a better idea

Is I’m going to sew it on still, but I’m only going to sew around these outward edges and not so down the actual middle part, Because if I do that, then I can still lift up the cotton batting and I can put the ends of the wefts under it

And then I can just have the ends of those totally hidden. Okay. I got all the cotton batting sewn on there. So now I’m just going to put this on the wig head, and I’m going to pin the crap out of it.

From what I’ve seen, this is just what you’re supposed to do with fossshape is pin it onto the thing. You’re shaping it over. And I’m particularly pinning the crap out of the back here so that the back actually forms into a head shape. Really technical terms here.

So now I think I just got to steam the whole thing, I really need to buy a new steamer. This steamer kind of sucks. you have steamer recommendations? Please let me know what they are, because this one, it takes forever to get going.

But then it will only steam stuff for like 30 seconds before it has to like, think about it again. All right, here we go. I’m going to put a whole lot of pressure where the seams are try to get that seam allowance to be at least kind of flat,

I can like see it shrinking. I’m just waiting for my steamer to make some steam. Okay. I think. I think I got all of it. Here’s how it sounds now. Hopefully it will actually fit on my freaking head. All right. my God. It is on there.

Think it wants to take the felt with it, which I’m just going to let it do. get the felt one out of there. Ho, ho, ho ho. look at that. That’s friggin sturdy. Okay. Moment of truth. I’ll put on a wig cap and I’ll see if it’ll actually sit on my head.

Well, this is a look. The question is, is it too tight? Like, I don’t think it’s too small, but is it tight enough that it will give me a headache? I’m going to try to steam it.

Not on the wig head and see if I can get it to, like, get a little bigger. You know? Okay. I gave it a little steam, and then I put it on my whole own head when it was still warm. Be careful doing that. Don’t do it when it’s really hot.

And also do not steam it when it’s on your own head. my God. You will burn all of your hair off and burn your entire scalp and die. You will die if you do that. You won’t actually die. But really, don’t do that.

Anyway, I got it warm and I put it on my own head. And I’m going to let it cool on my head so that it can make me shape to my own head a little better. So I think I’m going to go with this.

So the next step is to get my base wig and I’m going to hack it apart. This Wig in particular has like a skin topper. So I’m going to keep the front of this wig intact because I think I’m just going to be able

To use the bangs as they are and just style them. But I’m going to cut apart all the lengths of the back and hopefully I’ll be able to use the back of the wig to form the pigtail part. And if I need to, I will sacrifice some hair from the pigtails themselves

Because there’s way more hair in the pigtails than I actually need. so after getting the wig hacked up, I realized that I needed to go ahead and add pigtail supports because it’s going to be easier to Get them in there now before the hair gets glued on.

These pigtails are not going to be that heavy. So they don’t need crazy miku wig stuff to get them to work. What I’ve done is a variation of the way Kinpatsu cosplay does for her ponytail wigs. She’ll do like an X in warbler and then put a bolt through that.

I’m using a small bolt and then I have stuck it through some hanger wire because I just have it. This stuff is real sharp though, so if you get some, make sure you fold over the cut edges of it so you don’t get any cuts on your head.

But you could also do this with worbla. You could also do this with cardboard if you wanted to, but you need something in there to keep the bolt from like shooting through the foss shape, you know? yeah, the hanger wire has holes in it, so I just hand sewed it in there.

Okay. It’s time to start gluing down some fiber. for the part in the back, I picked out some wefts that will actually reach where the pigtails go. am not cutting any of the ugly stuff off of them because all that ugly stuff is going to go under that cotton batting.

But I have this whole part up here on the top And I’ve done some experimenting on how to cover that part And I want to go ahead and do the top part first. if you watched the hardest wig technique video, you might know

That I’m not great at this particular style of gluing down hair. But one of my Discord mods Lustrous cosplay. They told me about a technique they use for gluing down fiber like this. And it’s just a specific tool. They said they use a palette knife.

So I went and grabbed two of my palette knives that I have for oil painting. And that’s how I did this part over here. And let me tell you, it helps. So much so I have way over here. One of the pigtails, I’m actually only going to be using

One of the pigtail clips for the actual pigtails. This one can get hacked to shreds. So I’m just using tacky glue and I’ve got me a little bowl and I’m gonna take my tacky glue and I’m just going to put a bunch in the bowl.

Get some of that glue on the palette knife, And I’m going to get it on to the base where my next little strip of hair is going to go. I’m going to cut a little strip of fiber off of this pigtail I cut that pretty roughly.

So the next thing I’m going to do is go through and thin that out a little bit, and I’m going to very carefully and with the help of my palette knife place it into that glue and push it into place with the palette knife.

You don’t want to push it into place with your hand too much because you don’t want to get glue on your hand. So once it’s sort of placed, we need to press it into the glue. So what I’ve been doing is holding it down with the palette knife and then taking

The back of my comb and pushing it in one little section at a time. And then once it’s in the glue a hold the end down with the comb and then go back over it with the palette knife you can kind of scoot the ends

So that it actually kind of looks like it’s going into the pigtail and then get the hairspray spray with hairspray. hit it with this guy. And then I’d take the palette knife. I’m going to press it real hard into where the part is and I’m going to heat it.

And that just sort of helps kind of create the intent of the pigtail part up here. We’re going to get a much bigger indent back here with the cotton batting is. But for this part, that’s all I’m doing. So with that method, I’m going to cover the rest of this little area

That I need to Just with the tacky glue, with the palette knife, being really careful, making sure nothing gets weird. And I do really highly recommend using a palette knife for this because it keeps your hands clean. And that’s really important because as soon as your hands get glue on them,

You got to get the glue off because that’s going to make all that loose fibers stick to your hands really bad and it’s going to make it really hard to get it. Looking nice. But yeah, for a technique that I’ve been afraid of for literally years,

A technique that I feel like I have never really gotten a grasp on. One tool made all of the difference for me. And you know what? Doing this kind of work on wigs, I think is actually a little fun. so my side parts are done,

And I feel like they look pretty good, so I’m gonna move on to the back part. So I’m going to use these whiffs that are just cut out of the back of the wig. But then I also went through and folded them over and zigzagged them together.

And before I actually glue them, I want to pre shape them because the way this is going to work is they’re going to go in like this, but then fold over and go towards the pigtail. But this looks crazy. So I want to get that under control first. And do that.

I’m just going to stick them in where they’re supposed to go pin them in place. And then I’m going to steam them over towards the pigtail and the steamer kind of makes them wet, which ends up making them look kind of weird.

So I’m also then going to blow dry them to get the water out. and then I’m going to hairspray them a little bit and then I’m going to blow dry them again to set the hairspray. And that will give me a semi shaped weft.

And I’m going to do that to each weft before I do any glue. So I have a bunch of shaped wefts now, but I haven’t tested this next part out, so I don’t actually know if it’ll work. But I’m going to go for it.

So I’m going to open up my cotton batting and I’m just going to get some tacky glue on this side where this first weft is going to go. And I think I’m going to take this and carefully place it into that glue. Maybe I should glue them off first.

Yeah, I think I’m going to do that. I feel like that makes the most sense. Get the second weft, get more tacky glue in there. don’t know how big that one is. ima go all the way down cause I can look Trust the process. Trust a process you’ve never done before. Okay.

Put that sucker in there. get this last one in there. Ignore that the whole bottom won’t be covered. I have another piece for that one. So I’m actually going to lift up the cotton batting and put the glue directly on the cotton batting. So I know it’s exactly where it’s supposed to be.

Hopefully I’ll be able to get these pins out later. But I’m going to go ahead and pin it in so that none of that moves. It might be a little hard to get the pins out later because they might get kind of glued, but I think I’ll try to take them out

Before the glue dries and hopefully not forget. Don’t let me forget. Comment down below. Don’t forget to take the pins out. All right. Now, moment of truth now. Got a bald spot. I need to move this one down. They need to overlap more Theres glue everywhere down here.

No, no, no, no, that looks much better. Yeah, that’ll are already already looks pretty good. Other than in the back. Not really being straight. I mean, it looks pretty good, doesn’t it? But we got to get glued down, so I’m going to go ahead and Hairspray, all of this.

So it sort of sits together like this, so that the hairspray with the hair dryer I think I can pick all of this up gently and carefully. hairspray sure does make it stick to the cotton bedding, which is a good thing. We like that, but not when I need it to lift up.

Okay, now I’m going to get glue in there with the palette knife. I have glue in my hand. I need to not have glue on my hand Now I think I want to try to get that back into the shape that it was in and lay her back down palette, knife her.

I think I might want to do a tiny bit of glue on my palette knife. This might mess everything up. my God. I might be missing everything out. But I think I want to do this. And then this. This hair’s a lot easier to work with because it’s on the weft

When the hair is cut on both sides, it’s obviously harder to work with because if you’re pulling on it, you can pull it out. But this has a weft on the end of it, so I can’t really pull it out, Yeah, hairspray it one more time. Blow dry it one more time.

Up (garbage truck outside making noises) You hear that? it’s a future comment telling me, Sarah, don’t forget to take out the pins. HUP but I don’t feel any more in there. I can push them out from the back side once it comes off the form. But wow, look at that. Look at that.

I feel like that ooks pretty f____ good. Like what? Okay, so for the this bottom section here, this is a large part. It does have a bunch of ugly stuff on it. It has all these whiffs, the plan right now is to just glue this in there

And then do a little bit of cut hair on the very bottom to cover up these wefts I’ve not done anything like that before, but we’re going to try. And because this part is like all the way on the bottom of the wig, I’m actually going lay it on the table.

Where I can lay it like that. I’m basically just going to cover this entire area and glue with lots of glue down here and set it into the glue. I think that looks pretty good. Other than all this stuff down here. But I’m going to go ahead and do the other side,

And then we will get to how I’m going to cover the wax on the bottom here. So for this part down here, I did a little test and this seems to be working pretty good. So all I’m doing is getting a pretty short piece of fiber

And thinning the crap out of both ends of it. Okay. This is what I got. I’m going to get some glue right here. going to get the glue on there. Want a little extra glue down here at the bottom? going to gently place this to where some of this fiber goes

Past the edge of the bottom of the fossshape. So you want this to go past the edge of the base thing. get the dry palette knife. Smushed it in. But do a little bit of hairspray right now. Do a tiny little bit of hair dryer.

I’m going to get the teeniest, tiniest little bit of glue. And I’m going to put it over the edge that’s feathering into the rest of the pigtail. I’m going to take my dry palette knife and get most of it off. Like, I just took most of it off. Okay. Clean the palette knife

And then spread out the glue Hairspray. One more time And there we go. And I just got to do that to the whole bottom side of this. But that does two things. It’s covering up these wefts here at the back, but it’s also creating the hairline at the back of the head.

So I’m going to keep doing that until I completely cover the hairline and then I’m going to let this whole thing dry completely overnight before I start messing with the bangs. And the bangs were actually really simple. So I just took the front part of the wig that I cut off earlier,

I separated it into four little ponytails. and then glue that whole thing onto the very front of the wig. I also put the whole thing on my head earlier to make sure I knew where I wanted this to sit so that it actually looked good on my head.

But since tacky love takes forever to dry, I pin the whole thing on to keep it in place so I could go ahead and style the front. Frieren’s bangs are just tucked behind her ears. And obviously that would be really hard to do in a wig with a base made of face shape.

So instead, I’m going to glue them down. So I gave them a good comb. I heat shaped them a little bit with my steamer to get them going where I wanted them to go. I then pinned it into place where it would sit behind the ear. I set it with hairspray.

Set the hairspray with the hairdryer. Let it sit for a second. Did the other side, came back, picked it up, glued the crap out of it. So I put a ton of glue underneath it. And then I put a ton of glue on top of it. This is mostly going

To get covered by the side pieces so it can be completely coated in glue. And I actually really, really want to saturate the inside of this and glue. So I’m like really pushing that glue in there because if this moves at all, then the front of the wig

Is going to get messed up and we don’t want that. But I did that to both sides and then let that dry for a little bit before moving on to the other two pigtails that I have on there, which are just going to be the side pieces.

And all I really did to those was let them out of the little pigtails, And that was it for the bangs, now let’s finally move on to the easiest part. And probably the thing you clicked on this video for two pigtails that will never, ever tangle.

So let’s talk about the anatomy of your average pigtail clip. the best way to describe these is they’re a mini wig with an elasticated thing on them that holds them onto whatever you call these kind of clips. They’re actually super easy to take apart.

You just have to untie this thing and then get it to get off of the clip. I thought it was easy, but it is kind of a struggle to get one side off. But once you get one side off, it comes out really easy.

And if you’ve ever owned one, you probably know that they tangle really bad. reason for that is this is like more densely packed hair than a regular wig. So I don’t even need all of this hair to make two pigtails.

I’m going to use about half of this thing to make both of my pigtails. huuuuuuuUp Now, I don’t need this, so I’m just going to leave it over here. I want the top part because at the very top here, these wefts are sewn

In upside down and I want to use that for the base of the pigtail. Right. But I need to pigtails. So now I’m going to split this one in half huuuuuup That’s a lot of hair. Like, that’s enough for one pigtail for sure. then the next thing

The little piece that I’m going to use to attach the pigtails to the wig. But also keep them semi modular. and I managed to find a thing. I’ve actually been looking for years and never knew the name of it. And it’s this little thing.

This is a coupling nut and I had no idea what these were called. And I was like, These have to exist. There has to be a long nut in existence. I tried to Google it. I did not Google Long Nut, But then the other day I held up

A nut and I was like, This is a nut. Jo. What do you call a little tube with threads in it? And he said, I don’t know. And he googled Long Nut. And this is what came up. It’s called a coupling nut. Anyway, I’m going to fit this pigtail around this coupling nut

But I’m not actually going to glue them together yet So I’m just going to take this and wrap it around the coupling nut my gosh, this is fussy. I don’t like this. So now it’s in a little tube and I’m actually going to hand sew it

To finish off the tube, You’ll see why I’m doing it like this in a second. Just bear with me. All right. That’s a vaguely tubular now. So now I’m going to ignore this we’re going to move on to the thing that makes these tangle free and it’s the Pigtail Shield.

If you’ve never heard of a pigtail shield before, it’s literally just a tube of fabric that you put over the pigtail so that it it can’t tangle itself. People have done these in all kinds of fabrics. I’m going to do them in white tulle because I find that it’s the thing

You can’t see the most. I mean, like, look at this right now. You can’t even barely see it on camera. and they’re sort of smaller at the top and then get a little bit bigger at the bottom. But all I’m going to do and you cannot see this at all on the camera,

But I’m just going to fold them over to where the ends meet and run a stitch down the edge. So they form a tube and then turn the tube inside out. Okay, so now I’ve got a little tulle tube now I’m going to hold it from

The top where the little hole is, and I’m going to grab my tulle tube. And I’m going to carefully put this into the tube. You kind of just do it like you put on pantyhose. Really Pull that down. I made my tube too small. I got to remake the tube.

I remade the stupid tubes, but to finish them off, once you get them pulled on there, leave a little bit extra at the end near the hole and then grab a bolt or a pencil or something and shove the extra tulle into that hole.

Then I got my coupling nut and I went ahead and put it onto a long bolt and then got a bunch of glue in the hole and then stuck the coupling nut into the hole with the bolt and then took the bolt out.

Mostly use the bolt to help me get it in there. But it also kept any glue from getting into the coupling nut. Anyway. That’s it. Those are the pigtails. That’s how you get pigtails that don’t tangle. You put tulle over them. I’ve seen people also do this with organza.

I think I’ve seen people do it with power mesh. But to finish off the wig, I just got to screw these on to the bolts that are already in there. And Protip don’t try to rotate the pigtail, just rotate the bolt inside. But with that, my anti tangled, maybe

Indestructible pigtail wig will be done. And I guess it’s time to see if it is actually indestructible. This wig kind of saved this cosplay for me. The first time I put it on, I had a little bit of a “them shoulders don’t match them hips” moment.

I should’ve made the skirt bigger, but as soon as I put it on with the wig and the makeup, I was like, I’m Frieren That’s Frieren. Now I can say all her cool catchphrases like Do you want to be able to make a website like it’s Magic? Well, with Squarespace, you can.

  1. The tips in this vid are actually SOOOOOOO helpful omg!! You explain things so well, I appreciate you immensely Sarah!! I've been wanting to make a pigtail parted wig and this is definitely going to come in handy!! Thank you so much!! 💖💖

  2. I don’t plan on making any kind of cosplay wigs or any kind of wig like this tbh but I learned so so so much that I can use for other projects and I just want to say this is an amazingly good tutorial and my mind is honestly blown at how many applications this stuff could be used for I’m so glad this popped up on my suggested videos thank you so so much!

  3. Thank you so much for making this tutorial. I have an elaborate costume with a very elaborate wig that I want to make, and this tutorial is going to be indispensable.

  4. I’m so excited to make my first cosplay >:))) it’s gonna be the character (idk if it counts as a character-) I play in Elden ring 😀 I still need to learn how to sew tho. 😛

  5. Is there a way to make indestruable wigs for characters with open hair? I saw some tiktok videos, where someone is basically making the wig out of plastic, wire and glueing hair on it but idk

  6. I use the conair steamer and it does have a small water basin but it's wonderful and it can go for about 30 mins before I have to refill it. It's tan and the head is kind of wide if anyone is wondering.

  7. hi sarah! for glued "helmet" wigs you should really still keep it in a wig head if possible, as anything pressing or pushing on the wig for a long period of time (such as a flight) will still result in the helmet wig being misshapen. much love for ur videos !

  8. Another cosplay wig thing to add to my collection! Stuff like this helps to keep me motivated. I'm making a Ceroba Ketsukane (Undertale Yellow) cosplay and I'm starting on her wig tomorrow, this has helped me SO MUCH even though I'm doing… i dunno, maybe 10 different ponytails.

  9. i’ve also seen people use plastic bottlecaps to attach ponytails! you put the cap in the ponytail and the bottle part in the wig, it works great 😀

  10. I do a few crafts that need a lot of glue but no gluey hands , I use an embroidery hoop with a damp rag in it , I can get the glue off my fingers one handed if I'm already holding something in place

  11. I would wanna cosplay as akita neru but her hair is like miku pigtails but only 1 on the side- Im gonna be breaking my neck w dat so I cant💀

  12. I don't even cosplay, but I love to watch this channel because she always come out with an incredible solution for things that I can use with my sewing in general

  13. This was a great video I’m always learning something from your channel! Do you think you could make a video or like a short or something on showing one of your build books? I’m having trouble figuring out exactly what I should put in mine. I’m definitely the type too much too much! Thank you!

  14. Ahh! Can't express ENOUGH how much I love your videos, I always go to them when I need advice for cosplay or just want background noise for anything, you're such an inspiration for me and one of my fav cosplayers!
