The WORST cosplay contest I’ve ever seen

How would you feel if you walked up on stage and immediately got kicked off hang on I got to kick you back out well a couple months ago that happened to my boyfriend at his first costume contest but it wasn’t just bad for him I was contacted by several participants

Including winners and staff who all agreed that this was a disaster and I’ve been competing in Cosplay contests for almost 10 years and I’ve been judging them for like six and I know not everybody understands how these contests work but I’m going to make sure you do

So that you can fully comprehend the nightmare that was the dream hack Atlanta 2023 costume contest so dream hack is actually a series of gaming conventions and they have them all over the world they’re like giant land parties they’re big Magic the Gathering events they do gamer stuff for gamers

And I don’t know if every dream hack has cosplay stuff but the Atlanta one does and don’t run it very well and this has nothing to do with the cosplay stuff but a really weird thing that happened while we were there is this girl came up to us

With her phone already recording but then she goes can I ask you a question are you wearing deodorant yes I’m wearing deodorant but I’m also wearing scent bird the sponsor of today’s video do you want to smell so good you can scare off people trying to make degrading Tik toks well sent bird

You can because every month sent bird sends you new fragrances for just $117 and with over 700 fragrances and lots of unisex options C bird has a fragrance for everybody I have gotten several scents from scent bird so far but my absolute favorites have to be

Jardines de Mitzvah by un n NAD I’m trying don’t come for me for my pronunciation and dream by Katherine malandrino two very different scents jardines is more of this almondy smell and dream is more of like a classic feminine floral plus each fragrance is a 30-day Supply and you can get the really

Fancy designer fragrances at a fraction of the cost and you can get an even better deal if you use my code Sarah s for 55% off your first month of scent bird and with that discount it means your first month is a little over $7 thanks again to senent bir for

Sponsoring this video yes that story actually happened yes I was very offended I didn’t want to be in that girl’s Tik Tok and yes I was wearing deodorant so to be specific dream hack has a craftsmanship costume contest that’s a contest where the judges are not looking at who has the funniest

Cosplay the biggest or the flashiest cosplay the most popular character they are looking at the small details of construction is the sewing nice and clean or is there fraying fabric somewhere is the armor perfect and detailed or do you have hot glue strings hanging Off Of You the awards are based

On the execution of The Craft and in higher categories they also look at the difficulty of that craft and the variety of techniques that you used and most of them follow this formula you get signed up then you go get prejudged this is where the judges are searching through

Your costume for the fraying Fabric and the hot glue strings if they find any of those they’re probably not going to win depending on how big the contest is anyway after prejudging you go off you enjoy the con you wait for the stage show the stage show happens you have

Your moment in the Sun the contest ends the awards are announced and win or lose you were probably somebody in the audience’s favorite and hopefully you remember to tell your friend to get a video for you and that’s it and somehow dream hack messed all of that up except

For the signups they had online signups which was good 10 out of 10 there dream hack before I get into the bad stuff I need to make something very clear the way this contest was run is completely on the organizers and not on the judges the

Judges have no say in how the contest is run they are not told how the contest is going to be run all they do is come in and give their knowledge and pick winners that’s all they do they don’t set anything up okay and if you know who

These judges were do not go bother them because none of this is their fault and if I find out that you went and bugged them and I will find out I will find out and I will call your mom Mom okay everything that happened at this Con is

The fault of the organizers and not the judges I know that because I actually judged at dream hack 2022 and while it was a little more normal that year I didn’t have any freaking say in how it was run I just picked who won so the prejudging at dreamhack Atlanta if you

Watched the last video you already know that we walked into prejudging and found out that Joe was only going to be judged by one person which is really uncommon there’s usually like three judges if it’s a small con sometimes there’s two if it’s a big con sometimes there’s way

More and in the video where Joe made this cosplay I said that we found out that the reason this happened was because there were Sports in Atlanta that caused so much traffic that two of the judges got stuck in traffic but after the fact I found out that that

Wasn’t actually true here’s what I was told from an anonymous participant that I personally know was at the con that day I got there early I got an early time slot but I had to wait 30 to 40 minutes after my assigned time in that

Time I was waiting I saw at least two of the judges arrive though I don’t know the other judge by face alone so I can’t be sure if they were there however one judge did say something about being late because of the sports traffic when I got

Judged it was by one person and I didn’t have a single seam flipped I was also in novice but saw that the higher levels Journeymen and Masters got two judges so the thing about the sports was true but it was like a 30 to 40 minute delay and

Not a several hours delay like I thought it was but this account was just from one person so I also reached out to a staff member who contacted me after the fact because they also recognized that this was a mess yes all of the judges were there that morning however I was

Told that only one judge would be for novice and that there were two judges for journeyman and Masters which completely didn’t make sense to me they said that the novice category would be judged simultaneously with the Journeymen and Masters at the cosplay Corner which was another thing that

Didn’t make sense to me cuz every contestant would be flooded in the area as crew we were just told what to do and where to direct the cosplayers I don’t know whose ideas were those but clearly they weren’t great ideas on the day of I did talk to a

Friend of mine that was in master and he did tell me that he had two judges but we don’t know the truth as to why the novices only got one judge and you might think oh novice is the lowest category it must be the easiest to judge but it’s

Not novice is the hardest category to judge these categories are not determined by how many cosplays you’ve made though some coms actually do do that most of the time these categories are determined by how many times you’ve won novice is for people that have never never won an award in a craftsmanship

Costume contest before but you can enter novice and have been sewing or making armor for years and you just never entered a costume contest sometimes a novice comes in and outshines every master that entered the competition that novice then gets bumped into the Master’s category and takes Best in Show

It’s not a myth it’s a thing that happens and it happened to me several years ago it happened to me because it was my very first win I had never placed in a single award category so I had several years of competing experience under my belt by the time I went in and

Won in Masters so the problem is if you’ve only got one judge judging the novices how the hell is one person going to bump somebody up to Masters when they haven’t even seen the Masters category and when it comes to splitting hairs over who wins the category you only have

One person making that decision because the other two people didn’t see the cosplays and like the deliberation at the end of a costume contest is really important and it’s really important to have multiple people in it because deciding between cosplays that have hugely different varieties of techniques

Takes having people that have a variety of skill sets people that are great at Armor people that are great at sewing people that are great at wigs people that are a little bit good at everything it takes bouncing ideas off other people to come to a conclusion that you feel

Good about so this was just a bad idea we don’t know why they did it maybe they did it to save time but we don’t know but the reason doesn’t matter because by you giving the novice’s only one judge you are signaling to them that they are

Lesser that they are not worth the time and the energy that they put into their cosplay that they have come to your event in and that is hey I’m going to try to say this in a very sensitive way but the next thing is the issue of Judge

Experience and again don’t go bug anybody because I’ll call your mom but first let me tell you what the general requirements are to be a cosplay judge oh right there aren’t any cuz sometimes cons get people like voice actors or actors to judge a costume do

When they don’t even know how to sew but these people were cosplayers so at least we have that and more disclaimers because I’m about to speculate on somebody that I don’t know and I make want to make it very clear that I don’t know this person and I could be totally

Wrong but from what I looked at on the internet I don’t know that at least one of these people was not really qualified to be a judge however we do know that one of them was one of the judges for sure we know that there’s documented proof there’s evidence because she did

It on TV I’m talking about riddle I put her in the thumbnail riddle is qualified to be a cosplay judge we know that we I know she’s competed because I’ve seen it with my own eyes through my TV screen if you’ve at least got one that’s fine but

You separated them and don’t go bug her either cuz I’ll call your mom and I’m not going to tell you who I’m talking about but what do I think the requirements should be even though there aren’t any have won at least one award in the Masters category at a convention

With over 15,000 attendees or have at least five Master’s level awards at any convention or have worked professionally in prop making sewing or a related field or have handmade from scratch at least 10 costumes and be able to judge a cosplay on its craftsmanship alone and not the appearance race weight or

Disabilities of the cosplayer wearing it in my own perfect world those would be what their requirements are but there aren’t any and this is not the fault of the judges it is the fault of the organizers who put them in this position and it is a systematic problem that we

Don’t have any standardized requirements to do this job and again I don’t know these people so I could be wrong because I don’t know them I don’t know how many times they’ve judged before if ever and so I don’t know if they knew the standard protocol for how you judge

People do you remember this quote when I got judged it was by one person and I didn’t even have a single seam flipped uh so seam flipping is the practice of walking up to a costume and flipping over the Hem of the costume so that you

Can see both how the Hem was finished and how the seams are finished the way seams are finished tells you a whole lot about that garment and how knowledgeable that cosplayer is about sewing you also generally get up close to look at these tiny details you flip more than just hems you flip

Over cuffs you look under armor to see how it’s attached you see if that Armor’s finished on the underside you ask questions and you ask specific questions to make sure that person is not lying about whether or not they made it because yeah that happens but you do that to every person

To every costume no matter how simple because no matter how simple the cosplay that person still took a lot of time and energy and they deserve the same attention as anyone else for me there have been times where I’ve been judging a costume contest and if somebody walks

In and I can already see fraying fabric on the cosplay just from the second they walk in but I still get up and I still look at the cosplay because I know how it feels to not have a judge get up for you it makes you feel like you’re not

Worthy and you’re not worth their time and that’s not always true but if standing up and looking at a cosplay in detail can make or break someone’s experience of competing I’m going to do it for every person that walks in the door all right that was prejudging this

Is where it turns into a horror show because dream hack stage show was the worst I’ve ever seen so the presentation of the cosplays on the stage can be as simple as please welcome Miss Kitty to the stage as Luna from Sailor Moon wow best cosplay oh my God thank you Miss

Kitty or as complex as next we have Erica as the ring leader from the greatest showman she she wanted to make a dramatic coat and this is a very dramatic coat and uh her husband painted the feathers for her to attach to the Hat she looks fabulous and I love this

Musical there are also performance-based competitions where people get up and do SK but we’re not talking about that right now we’re talking about walk-on competitions where there is no skit generally for those the bare minimum is say the cosplayer’s name say the character name and say the series dream

Hack said the cosplayer’s name but they were not announcing character or series which is not a huge deal but like have you ever been sitting in the audience of a cosplay competition and you’re just sitting there going what is that from I want to know what that’s from well

Telling the audience what it’s from is is is uh kind of helpful uh they did announce character names of characters that they knew themselves if they didn’t know the character then they didn’t announce it they also people wrote their character names down on their little piece of paper so they totally had them

And something no one else but me would notice was some poor motion designer made a lower third for everybody but was not told to put the character or the series in the lower third and is somebody that has made thousands of lower thirds in her profession Prof

Career I can tell you that it is not that much harder to add extra text to a lower third another thing that was wild to me earlier I mentioned bumping which is where somebody from a lower category wins an award in a higher category important thing to note you don’t get

Bumped unless you won something this one person walked on stage and the MC is like um and sometimes those people we go no you’re not a novice you’re just too good uh so that’s our next one snow with her avatar the Last Air vender we said no you’re an

AR and I immediately knew they won something and so did she probably and so did anybody that’s seen a costume contest before and I get that not everybody knows how this stuff works but like getting bumped is a gag why would you ungag the gag for even a couple

People you can only get bumped so many times in your life right there’s only three categories once you make it to master you’re never getting bumped again the last thing I have to complain about is something that actually happened last year when I was judging this didn’t

Actually happen this year last year they did this thing and they didn’t do it to everybody but a contestant would walk on stage they would be doing their poses the MC would shove the microphone into their face and ask them some stupid question and no one had been told that

They might have to talk on stage some people were so put off guard that they didn’t say anything they couldn’t even hear hear him people in full helmeted armors they can’t hear you on top of that jabale who I will call out by name yeah the guy that’s the jab emote he was

One of the MC’s not a cosplayer don’t know why he’s mcing a costume contest but sir this is not your Improv Comedy Hour this is not the time to be making stupid jokes about the cosplayers that are coming on the stage to participate in your competition your job is to Hype

Up the crowd yell that cosplayer’s name to get them to cheer for people that put in more work than you can imagine and then you just need to shut the [ __ ] up let’s get to Joe getting shoed off stage I personally think that Awards should be

Done in one of two ways the first is beauty pageant style where all the contestants or all of the contestants in each category come back up to the stage they line up and then the winners are announced with everyone on stage the winners walk forward they claim the

Award woo woo give them their flowers this is obviously a little bit hard to do for contestants because then you have to sit there and pretend you’re not sad that you just lost so I think this should only be reserved for larger competitions where the contestants are

People that have done this a couple times for every other contest it is generally just a good idea to announce who won and let them run up on stage obviously it takes a second for the cosplayer to get up on stage but usually what that time is filled with is the

Judges are handed the microphone and the judges talk a little bit about why they chose that cosplayer to win it’s one of the most important parts of competing is to be told what exactly you did right but them being told what they did right also signals to the people that didn’t

Place what they can strive for in the future it also most importantly tells the audience why that person just won people in the audience might not be able to see the little details of that cosplay they might not know that that person spent 500 hours beating that

Thing and so if they’re told that everybody’s super excited to see wow I know how much work you put into that woo it’s important okay the way dream hack does it is to avoid that pause in time they have the contest Runner leave the stage she goes into the crowd of

Contestants and she picks out the top four in each category when it’s time for the category to be announced she brings all of them up and announces who got first second third and fourth if you don’t get lined up you pretty much know that you lost the shock the drama the

Gag it’s over and I don’t think that’s a good system but that wasn’t just my opinion this is a quote from the winner of Best in Show I’d never been in this contest before but the selection process was a nightmare I one best in show and the whole thing was just insanely

Awkward and poorly handled from a random commenter that probably wasn’t even at the competition that is so humiliating and dehumanizing and takes away from the whole camaraderie that comes with waiting to hear who gets called I also had somebody contact me and tell me that they had been in this competition but we

Too afraid to speak out about how weird it was because they were afraid they would be labeled as a sore loser but the grand prize winner didn’t think it was run well either the worst part of this system though is it leaves the door open for it to go

Wrong which it did so let’s bring up our novices if you were a novice and we just lined you up please join us up on stage Y not all novices hang on I got to kick you back out not all novices just the ones we l done you’re just on you L up sry awkward very awkward and listen I get it this is live you can’t always guarantee that people are fully listening to you or can hear

You or that maybe you misspeak it happens and I don’t entirely blame the MC for Joe and two other people walking on the stage Uninvited but there are other ways that this could have been handled put down the microphone and tell them personally I misspoke I didn’t mean

Everybody I need you to leave the stage and I’m sorry or you could completely pivot and then just be like oh yeah all of the novices come up all of the novices and then you have everybody lined up and then you announced the winners the beauty pageant style you had

A big enough stage to do that so you could have pivoted but I don’t blame you for not thinking of that in the moment okay the thing that made this moment horrifying was that she let everyone in the audience know that something had gone wrong and even said awkward awkward

Very awkward I watch a lot of drag race and I hear Michelle vage say all the time something like if we can tell you’re nervous you make us nervous if you tell everybody in the audience that you feel awkward you make everybody in the audience feel awkward and you made

It awkward she’s honestly lucky that she did this to Joe who did not care and this guy that just threw his hands up there are plenty of people in the comments of the first video saying how much they would have cried if this happened to them how they would have

Never competed again if this happened to them and the MC is pretty lucky that she didn’t Crush somebody’s Spirit of competing the thing is costume contests at smaller cons can be run well so I know dream hack can fix this when I judged in 2022 all three of the judges

Judged together so I know they know how to do that it’s not that hard to stop making the stage show The Improv Comedy Hour get jab Bailey off the stage and think about how hard the cosplayers worked for that moment give them the respect that they deserve and let the

Judges talk about the winners and praise them and please just read people’s names and shut up the unfortunate reality of costume contests is that they are kind of just the Wild West unless you have actually seen the contest before or you know somebody that’s done it you don’t really have any

Way of knowing if that contest is well-run or not but through unfortunate miscommunications strange decisions and sports this one was the absolute worst costume contest that I have ever witnessed the big thing is I don’t want them to stop having this costume contest I want them to make it better and I

Honestly hope that somebody sends them this video and they see it as what it is it is critique it’s a little a little bit of a roast because you kind of deserve it but how do we know how to get better if we don’t get flamed for being

Terrible y’all can do better it doesn’t take a lot of money it just takes doing the standards of the community contests are one of the best and sometimes only ways for a cosplayer to judge where their skill set is it’s one of the best ways to learn how to improve one of the

Best ways to meet other cosplayers and get to pick their brains they are an integral part of the community for learning growth and connections and they should be a fun and welcoming experience win or lose Noosa or master so when you run a contest where even the winners

Have words for you you [ __ ] up and you can do better so do better dream hack if you want to see how much love goes into any cosplay you should subscribe because I’ve got lots of videos on that topic and if you want to see Joe’s journey to

  1. this video made me realize how bad the first (and only) contest I've ever participated in was :')
the judges didn't get up for me, I didn't even know they were supposed to but my cosplay wasn't very complex or anything, I just really wanted to try out competing
I had fun and I loved meeting everyone I was competing with, but realizing that I wasn't worth the seam flip makes me sad 🥲🥲

  2. I've been sewing and making cosplays just a out my entire life. I wanted to compete at conventions so bad but during that time in my life I was having difficulty with being touched and people being behind me very close to me. I got ready for one convention but had to stop the judges not even a full minute in because I just couldn't handle it. I understand why they have to do all of that but I wish there was some way they could make accommodations for some people.

  3. Fabulous video! It was horrific to watch that part of Joe's cosplay build/video. I feel honoured though that you included my judge's choice award at holmat xoxo THANK YOU! Happy memories!

  4. The one and only comp I did in 11 years of cosplaying (and I did it pretty early on) fucked me up so bad. They called my username as a winner and as I was running up to get onstage, also just full on into the mic, they go "oh, not YOU!" Because they'd mixed up goddamn usernames somehow 🙂

Anyway, cons need to get their shit together on cosplay competitions. You absolutely can and will turn people from being excited to participate in a big community showcase into people who never want to touch competitions again.

I hope your boyfriend doesn't take this shitty, inappropriate treatment to heart and can try again somewhere else!

I'm hoping my slow but hopefully thorough build I'm working on of Karlach from BG3 now can be my first attempt back at a competition one of these days. It sucks to be terrified something like that will happen again, even knowing it's irrational.

  5. Listen I am not in the cosplay community, but your videos are such a treat! I love watching and being able to appreciate the craft that goes into cosplay!!

  6. I was a contestant, and I was backstage a lot because I competed in 2 comps back to back (singing then cosplay). And because of this I watched how almost everything was piled onto ONE COSPLAY STAFF MEMBER TO DO. This poor lady was running around so much she didn’t realize she had been holding fake flowers for 20 minutes until someone pointed them out to her, and at that point she didn’t even remember what they were for. I do not remember her name but she was dressed as Superwoman, and she was an angel.

Also, sadly, the grabbing the winners practice has become so much more common in the Atlanta comp scene, DragonCons FNCC and Masquerade and Atlanta comic con also do this. ACC’s is actually worse, they don’t wait till everyone is done on stage when you get off stage you tell someone your contestant number and if you win you go left, you lose you go right.

  7. 16:20 I actually got bumped up from beginners to intermediates in only my third competition (no awards won previously) and I was very shook, nervous, and intimidated, all my friends were telling me that means I probably won by default, however contest ends and i got nothing. I'm not upset over not winning, I was upset I got forced up a division with no good reasoning. It was again only my third contest, I was still relatively a baby cosplayer, and was then stuck in that division and was not allowed to even plead to stay in beginners. They forced me to compete in intermediates… Luckily this specific competition has since changed its judges, cosplay head, and over all rules and standards of running and is much better now, but it doesn't change the damage that was done to my baby cosplayer self and the other poor cosplayers this happened to as well…

  8. I'm sorry Joe had to go through that nonsense. It would scare off any new cosplayer to the point of not wanting to participate. I'm glad he was a good sport about it, and I hope his next attempt at competing goes even better!

  9. ..omg, the seam flipping step would scar me for life. I've had some baby cosplay that if you looked at the seams….it would be a lovecraftian nightmare of hand basting, fabric glue, possibly hot glue and (while unseen, completely felt) prayers.

But this video reminds me of a local cosplay contest at a diner. I wore a Lady Amalthea adjacent The Last Unicorn costume (bought the skirt and horn but made the top, hand sewn butterflies, made clip in ears, dyed the chiffon for my shawl, full makeup and painted my shoes to look like hooves). I came in 2nd place to a girl who did a cardboard sandwich board of Pac Man. No makeup. Black leggings, yellow shirt under a big circle cardboard, paper and colored duct tape sandwich board.

One of the judges (the only woman out of the 4) came up to me and apologized. She said that she took one look at my costume and immediately knew how much effort went into it and said if it had been up to her, I'd have taken 1st place. She even stated (with no small measure of disgust) that the only reason Pac Man won was because the 3 White male 'judges' liked how 'spunky' the other girl was. I read spunky as 'Skinny, younger and White.'

That latter is because someone else who was Blacked entered as King Jaffe Joffer from Coming to America in the FULL coat, crown, mounted lion's head on the shoulder, sash, just…EVERYTHING. He looked so much like JEJ from the movie that I told my husband "I'm…gonna lose to that. There's no way I can win up against that degree of detail." I even found out through chatting that the dude made everything by hand and I nearly did the Wayne's World "I'm not worthy!" move to him.

…he came in 4th behind another duct tape, Lowes ventilation tube arms/legs and cardboard 'robot' entry. This was an adults only contest mind you. No kids. No one under 18 but it was very disheartening to see the better costumes made by contestants of color getting back seated. Because it wasn't just us two. Most of the runners up were….pretty bad but all White. I sometimes think King Jaffe and I were token nominations.

  10. I go to a convention where the judges for the contest are the hosts for the con, they have cosplay guests, but they aren’t for the contest…. One host (technically the owner of the con?) isn’t a cosplayer and never has been… it’s so awful and they think they have the ability to judge their contests based on international competitions judging standards… it’s so awful…

  11. Call me a sore loser, but my worst cosplay show experience felt a bit awkward in regards to the fact that I handmade and crafted an entire suit of armor, had sewn the clothes and put them through a serger to give them that completed look, had handmade a giant sword and painted tiny details into it and had actual lights built into it so it could glow green, and what won the contest? A kid with a closet cosplay of Ness from Earthbound. Didn't hand make the shirt or shorts or anything, bought a red cap, no backpack, no baseball bat. That won best in show, and I didn't get a damn thing. When I asked the judges why he had won, they said it was because he had the most recognizable character to them, and I didn't fit the character I was because I was just a bit chubby, even though the armor was built with my size in mind. For the record, I was barely overweight, but that actually full on sent me into tears and a bit of an ED later on

  12. my heart breaks for Joe and the other two. oh my god the horror. As someone who is to afraid to get on stage with her own cosplays FOR THIS EXACT REASON- oh my heart

  13. sorry if this is long this migh be TMI but am a big girl and my bo is bad and nothing I've tried has worked i still stink and i also have sweating problems I've tried everything kind of dedordent from old spice, dove ,secret and the one that everyone hates and makes fun of can't remember the name but nothing seems to work might have to try this dedordent but also maybe i should probably talk to my physical doctor/obgyn about it to see if it might be a medical problem am disabled and sorta never thought to ask

  14. This reminds me of our Australian convention, Supanova. The announcer (often this one annoying guy) always makes really awful jokes and yaps on. The cosplayers always seem super uncomfortable too. It honestly ruins the experience. As much as I want to enter a cosplay competition, it's the only one we have, and I don't want my first experience to be ruined like that.

  15. I hate it when it's a popularity contest OR worse.. a friend of the judges wins best in show……… (눈‸눈)

  16. As a person with a lot of mc experience/public speaking experience, the mcs at this con was definitely not prepared or ready for this, they also might not have much experience for hosting.

  17. I couldn’t even finish watching the original video after reading all the comments about what happened because it made me too sad. Thank you for deep diving into this.

  18. I went to mechacon in New Orleans from 2017-2019 and our cosplay contest announcer named Queen D made the experience fun for everyone but this announcer is really disappointing and I feel horrible about the people who were shooed off stage.
