  1. Babylon is an outstanding movie, definitely not for everyone but still amazing, it hit hard about why we love cinema and why we would want to be a part of it, there was something visceral about it litteraly made me question my current carrer choice and encouraged me to pursue my dream carreer (that is in the field of cinema ofc) but the fact that it got nominated in the costume desgin category which was litteraly his only big flaw (objectively – not talking about personal preferences here) shows how dumb the Academy can be. I'm quite contempt about the wins in general, so happy for Brendan, Michelle and Ke Huy they deserved it a lot, i would've made a few changes about who won (or who got nominated) for some other categories though but yeah, they really did Babylon wrong

  2. I am so happy EEAAO racked up the awards, I love it dearly and it absolutely deserves the world!
。゚(゚´ω`゚)゚。 (Multiverse? Multiverse.) So many things about that movie were incredible, but Shirley Kurata’s costuming especially made me so happy and I got the chance to learn about it from Yissel’s YouTube video which really went into depth on all the character’s costuming which were so cool. Everything Everywhere All At Once- just, an incredible team, and an incredible movie that I will remember for a long time.

  3. in my stagecraft: cosmetics and design class, we watched a recorded zoom event where the costume designer of Black panther explained her process and how all the costumes were designed and it was so increíble and inspiring to learn from.

  4. I can’t believe they didn’t let Zelensky to have a word at Oscar’s because “that’s very political and he is white” but gave an award to Navalny movie and gave a word to the Navlny’s wife who didn’t even say a word about the war or that she is sorry or about the genocide her country does. That’s so two- faced. Please go watch Ukrainian documentary. It so good and tells about orphans from Donetsk region. Ukrainian kids and families are the real victims of russian regime, not fucking Navalny. I’m so mad. It’s been so many years of the war and more than a year of the full scale war in my home and academy does this. I’m interested if they say interviews of Navalny saying that he is not planning to give Ukraine her territory back after he becomes a president and says that he doesn’t see anything wrong with taking Ukrainian territories… I have no wards to describe this betrayal.

  5. For Babylon, it's so sad that all that work went into the costumes only for the costumes to look completely underwhelming. Like, lady you didn't have to work so hard. It wouldn't have made much of a difference.

  6. your comments on eeaao aged so well, its now the most awarded movie EVER. as it should be, that movie means everything to me <3

  7. The only qualm I have about Black Panther: Wakanda Forever winning is that Nakia's fighting suit looked cheap af. Especially compared to the elaborate designs and fabrics of the previous Marvel movies. There were sooooo many points that the viewer could see how the fighting suit is printed synthetic fabric, and that just disgusted me.

  8. love the video, Mina. I can sit still in one place and listen to you chatting about costume design the whole day

  9. Would you ever do an analysis of the costumes from Avatar 2? I know there is no historical precedent for an alien culture, but the costumes were really good and I would love to read your take on them. All of the pieces were created by Wētā in real life before being digitized, so it is not all digital.

  10. One of the reasons that I watch period films is for the esoteric nature of the costumes, set, language etc. Margot's costumes really pulled me out of the era.

  11. On the historical accuracy of Babylon, I felt like Nelly not following the most trendy hairstyle and clothing was aligned well with her character. A while after she becomes famous there is the part where they start to try to clean up her image and make her go to a uppity party. They cut her “wild child” hair and style it like the typical 1920s bob for this event. I feel like that scene needed to show the contrast through hair and costumes as well as the change in how she was “supposed” to act. She doesn’t follow these trends because it is more realistic to show that people do not always do that in real life. That’s why it aligns with her character, I could not imagine Nelly caring to follow rules or anything similar.

  12. Loved this style of video!!! Echoing others but I usually don't care about awards ceremonies at all, but I was so entertained throughout this whole video. I love the way you do your research and are respectful to all cultures. Would definitely love to see this repeated!!!

  13. Mina! Your mention of anachronistic female leads makes me think of Claire in Outlander. Maybe a rare time where the designers pull ifoff because she's a time traveller. Personally I think season 1 and 2 do this SO WELL! Especially the red dress (look it up if you don't know…. It is AMAZING) based on Givenchy from the 1950's but Claire is wearing it to Versailles in 1745. I'd love to know your thoughts. 🙂

  14. for real i thought babylon took place in contemporary times from the trailers and i was shocked to learn it took place in the 20s💀

  15. i loved the outfits in everything everywhere all at once bc wow, this is what it truly meant to be experimental. and the film itself was just so true the asian-american identity in hollywood. the generational trauma, the martial arts choreography inspired by old chinese films, and even the mix of both english & chinese blending seamlessly. it was unapologetically asian-american, and even more specifically chinese-american. as someone who is an asian-american, it meant so much to me that this movie was made, and i loved it even more because they tried to tell it in such a weird and experimental way. it was interesting outside of the message, which only made the core message of the asian american experience only stronger as it transcended the boundaries of reality.

  16. 14:28 not her bringing up the bane of my existence: Grace's modern ass bob in season one of peaky blinders 😭😭 You're so right about the main girl syndrome in period pieces though. Thank god they fixed her hair in later seasons

  17. i enjoyed babylon but they should've had you as a consultant hahaha, you know how to style the 20s and make it cool!
people are afraid to set trends.

  18. But like… standard period films aren’t all that accurate to begin with… so he had the resources/opportunity to do something unique (making it more accurate) and intentionally did not do that. Annoying.
