コスプレ用のフォームハンド。
Welcome back, my fellow makers. I can’t tell you how many times when I come to making cosplay making gloves, uh, I always end up putting gloves on and trying to put foam onto my hand with hot glue and then I try to do it on my right and unfortunately I’m right-handed, so it doesn’t work as well with my left and it’s always difficult. But I realized in the movie industry, uh, we would make these handcast and we’d separate the fingers and put them together with magnets or pins and the hands would be able to disassemble, put the glove on and put them on and then be able to put things onto them or cast them in foam rubber to make great hands. And I thought, hey, let’s make them. But instead of going through that process, expensive process of molding and casting, we’ll just make them out of foam. So that’s what I did. And I’m going to show you how I did it right here on the Old Ted channel. [Music] [Music] To start to make our foam hands, we’re going to use a pattern. This is my hand. I actually traced. laid it down and traced it. Now, you notice there’s notches. I made the notches where my knuckles are because you want to have the hands slightly bent. At least I do for making these uh gloves. So, we’re going to start with this. So, I’m going to trace this onto 1 in EVVA foam, which you can see I’ve already done to save time. Uh I trace these little marks here. Now, now I think about it, I want to go ahead and connect these guys because this is really important. these uh knuckle marks. Now you guys got these guys. Let’s go ahead and uh separate them cuz we are going to cut these out on the band saw. There we go. Okay. Fantastic. All right. Now, we’re going to go ahead and take these guys over to the band saw. All [Music] right, there they kind of roughed them out with the uh the band saw. Of course, some of these spots I can get with an Xacto knife. I just cut out the worst of it, get the most of it. So, I’m going to come in with a craft knife and just cut between the fingers like that. that [Music] cuz eventually I’m going to take these guys with a rotary tool and soften them all up, but I want to make sure I don’t lose my uh my bends. So, I’m going to go ahead and just translate these guys over and that. Okay, the next thing we’re going to do, we’re going to round off these edges a little bit using a rotary tool, which makes a lot of dust. So, I have my downdraft table, which is simply uh it’s a piece of uh MDF board with pieces of one by around the edges and a peg board on top with an exhaust port right here for vacuum to suck up the dust. So, we’re gonna be when grinding it pulls the dust into the table. It doesn’t go all over the shop. When grinding foam, people, I can’t recommend you got to get a mask cuz dust is terrible, especially in your lungs. So, when grinding foam and getting really fine dust, be sure to wear your mask. And we’ll be using a sanding drum. Take the stone bit off. Use the sanding drum. And again, we’re just going to round off the edges. Okay, I got the hands all rounded up. Let’s go ahead and remove the downdraft table. Now, we’re going to take these hands. The one thing I don’t I want to position the thumb. Yeah, just like this. Straight down the thumb. That. See? So, we’re going to do is we’re going to take this guy and we’re going to cut it. But I’m just going to cut um do like half inch. Maybe that. So if the thumb sits in like that a little bit, you know, uh, you know, that could be more. Now, let’s cut some. I want cut more off it. [Music] Like that. There you go. Yeah. Let me just take this. I’m going to go over the belt sander. I’m just going to flatten this guy out real quick. Yeah, that’s it. That’s what I want. So, we’re going to do the other one too as well. [Music] Nice. Okay. Now, table. Let’s start labeling them. Let’s go and just make this the the right hand. Now, what I’m going to do is go ahead and we’re going to take the uh fingers um and bend these knuckles. Let’s cut this all the way through like that. a slight bend, right? Like that. [Music] So, this have a slight bend, right? And same with the finger here. [Music] See? To show you guys what I’m doing here. This there’s there’s a little tweak there. So, let’s go ahead and get some contact cement. I have a little fan off camera that shoots air across my table. So, when I’m working with my uh contact cement, I don’t breathe it directly into my lungs. So, we’re going to dab a little bit of glue in here. [Music] There you go. Got that. And right this palm, right? There you go. So, I’m going to do the same drill again. We’re going to do this on all the fingers. Okay, I went ahead and got all the fingers uh got them slightly bent and glued. Uh I’m looking at them now and they look all right. They’re not bad. They’re coming together. Uh the thumbs, like I said, I’m going to do these with magnets, but um Oh, wait a minute. I just realized. Yeah, on the thumb. Yeah, because the knuckles more on the side. Yeah, I’m not going to color way through. I’m just going to do this. There we go. Okay. [Applause] All right. Pinch. Perfect. And perfect. So now, yeah. See that? Ah, that’s great. I just realized, see, this is why you do a test run because these, for example, thumb’s gone and this and so you take these guys off, these two. Got it. Okay. Now, so we don’t confuse ourselves, this is the right, right? [Music] left. [Music] So, we’re going to cut this nice and straight. Okay. Fantastic. So, what we’re going to do, we got our thumbs right and the right. Let’s get some earth magnets. Let’s load these guys up. So, I’m going to need my wood burner. And what we’re going to do is we use the wood burner to make the recess for the magnets. I took a wood burning bit. Um, it had a pattern on it, but I took it to the belt sander. I made it flat. So, this is my magnet burner. So, we got this guy and we’re going to grab some magnets. Fantastic. We have our earth magnets right here. We’re going to be using uh and today we’re going to be gluing them today uh with Starbond. Now, normally I like using goop, but I’d like to finish this video today. So, we have this glue uh going to put it in here. So, what we’re going to do next is we’re going to have some magnets. I think this is a to hold this thumb in here. It’s going to probably be two magnets. Uh, which means four magnets. We’re going to have like a magnet here and a magnet there. So, let’s plug in this wood burner. All right. We’re going to do one at a time. So, let’s go ahead and shift this hand off to the side. As I heat the foam, I kind of push the magnet in while the foam is still hot. But I want to make sure that that’s why I like using these as magnets so I can make sure the magnet goes in the foam but not all the way. So you can see you want to make sure a little bit of that lip is still showing on the magnet. So I have my magnet right here. I kind of heat this up like that. I come with a magnet. Push it a little bit. Just like that. See? So there I have the impression for the magnet and I know it’s going to fall. Then I’m going to do another one right here. Push the magnet into it. Just like that. All right. Got it. Now, now that we have this, you’re like, this is our left thumb, so you know it’s going to go right here. But you want to make sure the magnets fall in the same spot. So, what we’re going to do is uh going to glue these magnets in first. But before we glue in, I got to rough it up with the magnets. So, I’m going to take these guys right here, these two. Now that we rough the magnets, you know, I roughed up both sides of the magnets. These are the parts where the glue is going to make contact. Uh you always want to anything smooth when you’re dealing with glue, it’s always best to rough it up. Got my glue. My dabble in here. My glue like that. come with my magnet and push it in like that. Perfect. Now, see, make sure you don’t glue both down. Just like that. Now, you see I’m leaving the other magnet on here. All right, that is crucial. Glue the magnet. Of course, the other one’s stuck on there. The reason I keep both these magnets Oh, nope. Don’t damn it. That’s something you got to watch out for. That will happen. Stay put my finger for this one. That’s how strong they are. All right, hold them. Starbond. This is the medium, and it’s got a little bit slower of a cure time. Takes about 10 to 15 seconds for it to dry, which I like because it gives you a little bit more working time. So, we want to be able to place these right back in the hand. And uh the compression. So, what I like to do is likely heat this up first with a heat gun and take my thumb, line it up, right? Like this. I push, hold for a couple seconds, let go, and you can see the impression of where the magnets are right there. So then, so now that we have that, see, see how it just drops in perfectly. Now we know this magnet goes here and this magnet goes here. So get this guy off. Put them in like that. Good. The glue. All right. Set these guys aside. Give them about 15 seconds to dry. What we’re going to be doing is we’re going to be doing the same thing with the left fingers. [Music] So, while these guys are drying, let’s check out our thumb. Here we go. Tada. So, let’s go ahead and do the same thing. I’m going to heat this up. [Music] Tada. There it is. Look at that. One down, one to go. All right, this is this the thumb. Perfect. There they are. These are my hands with the magnet connectors. The next thing is let’s get some gloves and do a test fit. All right. Now, look at these hands. Again, I’m very happy with them, but I’m realizing something that uh I have some gloves right here. Uh, I fit them on. And even though they’re large, they say large. Um, they’re still um pretty snug. And with that being said, there’s no way these fat fingers are going to get in here. So, we still need to do some cutting on these guys. We’re going to do is label these fingers. Let me get a uh marker, which I had. This is the thumb, of course, right? We got thumb. That’s pretty easy. To get these guys to fit, we’re going to go and just instead of doing a lot of grinding, we do a lot of cutting. Like, for example, the thumb. Let’s take these thumbs off. Yeah, let’s keep these thumbs. I’ll grind these guys. I think I cut these guys enough. Let’s move on to the hand. The profile this. [Music] I want kind of making sure I’m keeping it nice and square. Getting too far away from what I want to do here. Keeping it like that. Good. Good. Good. [Music] There we go. Good, good, good. Wow, this already looks so much better, right? Doesn’t it? Look at that. All right, we have the right and the lefts. I’ve went ahead and Yeah, the fingers look so much better. I trimmed them all down. We’ll go ahead and get this prepped and start uh let’s get my rotary tool and some sanding drums and we’ll start doing some grinding. We have my rotary tool with a sanding drum. So, I’m going to do some grinding and I’m going to have to mute the microphone because it’s going to be loud. I have some earbuds and I put them in every time because high pitch noise, guys, over long duration times damage your hearing right down to the rotary tool, the vacuum cleaner. Take that time and protect your ears. All right, here it is. The moment of truth. We got our glove. Now, the plan is take this apart. We take the thumb [Music] And you work it into the glove. Now that’s the actual shape of a finger. There you go. Got the thumb in there. Pinky and index is next. Here we go. Moment of truth. And then hold the glove over the hand like this. The magnet grabs the thumb. Drop in place. And the finger. Boom. There it is. We have the foam inside the hand and I can glue armor onto this hand. All right, let’s get the I just do the same thing again and thumbs in place there. Boom. They’re almost complete. I just realized one more thing I want to do. I went ahead and made some additional to add to their wrist is a piece of foam. I took two pieces of 1 in, glued them together, round off the edges, and stuck a PVC pipe in the back. And that is because I drilled a hole in a 2×4 for the base to prop them up in. So, we’re going to go ahead and I made two of them. I’m going to glue them on cuz I figured when I was building it’d be nice just to have a little bit of extension on my glove cuz I would like the glove to go a little further back on whatever I’m making. Let’s get some contact cement. that. Now I can call these hands done. Well, yes, the hands are done. So to go ahead and put them to the ultimate test, I went ahead and fabricated hands on these. Now, these hands are from my feral ghoul costume I’ve been doing on my live stream. So, the ultimate test. Went ahead and fabricated on top of them. And now we’re going to get the hands out. Uh, I have a little stick here. I’m going to go and reach underneath here and make sure everything’s loose. Uh, although I did add some spandex to the uh, glove. Granted, it is a little narrow. I’m kind of hoping the fact I can squeeze my hand through there. So, that might have been a mistake, but we’ll find it here shortly. But, go ahead. And I’m going put my stick up here. Make sure everything’s loose. So, we’re going to go ahead and start with the center and just pull on these fingers here in the center. Like that. [Music] And they should slide out in theory. Oh, wait. Oh my goodness. Oh, there it is. All right. So, we can go ahead. Let’s get the This might be tricky. I have to get the uh the thumb out, right? and this finger. But since I will tell you, let’s put this to the test. Let me see if I can get my hand in there. Oh, looks like it’s going to work. So, I just got to reach in here and grab that pinky, [Music] that thumb. [Music] Yep, there it goes. [Music] There. There’s the right hand. Now for the ultimate test. Let’s see we can get my hand in there. This kind of tore loose cuz I should have sewn it and I glued it. So I’ll probably have to go back and stitch that. So that’s what happens when you get lazy. Look at that. It worked. Fantastic. The sole purpose of making these is so I can do things like this. Let’s go ahead and take out the left one. Also, I just realized something, too. These the latex is still fresh and sticky, so I got to put some some baby powder on the parts that are touching so they don’t stick. [Music] Get this. All right. You guys can see I had some saran wrap here just to help not stick. But the one thing I’m definitely going to do on these hands. Now take this plastic off real quick. All right. After making those uh monster hands, I realized that the wrist was a little tight. So what I’m going to do um I’m going to go ahead and beef up these wrists cuz they’re a little bit narrow. So I got me some 6 mm foam, made a little template, and I’m going to wrap these guys. So, I’m apply this. And so, what this will do, this will beef up the wrist a little bit more. So, when I make the glove, I’ll be able to get my hand out. All right. So, let’s apply some contact cement. [Music] Okay, the glue is dry. Line it up. You can see right here, I beveled the edge so it’ll kind of taper off nicely. Yeah, much better. All right. Fantastic. Now, the wrists are a little thicker. So, if I build the um gloves on this, I can definitely be able to slide my hand through them. Now, the next thing I want to do is I’m going to go and just seal them up. Um since they’re foam and I just want to be able to pull the fabric off and on, I think it’ be smoother. Just go ahead and seal a little Mod Podge on the foam. So, one little extra step just to seal things up a little bit. Okay, the uh Mod Podge is all dry. These look great. Now, they are got my little blocks. My foam hands for cosplay are done. [Music] And there they are. the foam hands. Now that I got these guys, uh, I can add this to my cosplay arsenal. So, in the future, if I go to make armored hands or monster hands or anything, I have these gloves, well, these foam hands that I can disassemble and put gloves on and make my own monster hands. Uh, I won’t lie, this was a little bit of a I kind of was learning as I was going on this video and making them. So, I’m really happy how they turned out. And again, if this is your first time watching this channel, please do not forget to like and subscribe and share with your friends. Also, go to my website, eviltedsmith.com, where I have patterns. And also, everything I use on this build is listed below the video. And if you really want to do some cosplay shopping, go over to evilsmith.com where I have patterns and I have a great supply list. So, by shopping through my Amazon links, I get kickback which helps me keep making videos. Everybody, thank you so much for watching this. This was crazy. Uh, I wanted to do this. I knew it would be expensive and so I thought I don’t want to mold and cast my hands. I’ll just make them out of foam. And they came out great. I’m still, you can tell I’m really happy how these turned out. Thank you so much for watching and I’ll catch you back next time right here on the Evil Ted channel. [Music]
