In a society where most people have, if not a dagger, then a knife on their person most of the time, you're in serious trouble if they sneak up behind you regardless of whose blade they use. They might try to disarm you to make it safer for them but that risks you noticing and having more time to react, or they can leave your dagger on the belt and just start stabbing with their own. The modern fear isn't precluded entirely, but rendered near moot if the assailant is already armed, which they probably were.
