  1. I remember watching this show thinking i would look at how people constructed their cosplays and how competitions went. I didn't finish it because of all the manufactured drama, it stressed me out waayyy too much to find the show fun. And i hated how much emphasis it put on the sex appeal/sexy cosplays. I'm sure many people do have fun with that in cpsplay, but having an almost all-women cast and putting that kind of emphasis made it sound like every woman doing cosplay did it for showing off boobs, while the only guy made the cool stuff like a "normal" person. The show made me dislike the cosplayers so much, i despised anything yaya han branded for the longest time 🙈

  2. I'm just starting cosplay myself and I get so self concious becuase i am over weight. I want to do poisin ivy but am terrified to do it because of people out there with that 'you need to be thin' mindset.

  3. Just 2 things…

    1. I was just starting on the cosplay hobby when they announce this and I was so excited, given, my first ever cosplay was of a Homestuck Troll, I know, I know, but it was simple, and I was sooooo proud of my first time trying to make props (the horns) took me a whole weekend (cause school and shit, you know) so when HoC was announce I was over the moon, I wanted to see how other cosplayers did this, if there were gonna be pros in it, if they showed how to do stuff, tips and tricks, you know, I think what everyone expected, just the community being a community… and when the first episode dropped, I was so dissapointed, and then with the whole drama of the weight stuff, I felt bad about my first ever cosplay, as I did Equius, and he's suposed to be this muscly guy too strong to even pet animals, and I was an overweight school girl, so I dropped my expectations and took that episode to heart and didn't even look at tryin to cosplay the guy characters I always loved until my friends noticed that, and asked "why are you doing a cosplay of Roxy when you wanted to do Cronus next?" so, yeah, sad times (now is different tho, I got better self-esteem, and do whatever I like, thou, I haven't done cosplay in years now, Ive thinking of going back with Delicious in Dungeon and my own DnD Character lol)

and 2. … Jesse was my favorite and always though he resonated more with us hobbist in cosplay than… Yaya… I was so sad he wasn't in teh spotlight as much as the rest u.u

I also remember Chloe talked in her social media about the show and how she discovered later on the problems with it, along the cuts that made it and the changes the cons did just for the show that affected the cosplayers that weren't in the show, sad times indeed u.u

  4. heros of cosplay was a core memory in my cosplay journey. I watched that show with my mom when i was about 11 and while it had its horrible potrayal of competitions and shitty takes, it made my mom and I really get into cosplaying and she would help me design and make cosplays. it honestly made me feel inspired to actually enter competitions as a kid and I actually won a judges award as a 12 year old ??? I'm 23 now and still frequent cons but watching this video really made me realize how inaccurate it is to cosplayers i've met and worked with as i grew up. I dont cosplay as seriously anymore (no competitions) but this video made me reminise and realize, boy this show was a hot mess…

  5. This is a great video, really well done with the interviews at the end, too, and I think what you say at the end is really honest and noble ❤

  6. I was cosplaying for 10 years already when HOC came out, and I've still been cosplaying 10 years since. It's so interesting going back to really disect what was happening in the show both on and off screen. I remember watching the episodes in real time and seeing the online drama unfold minute by minute. Even though the show had many (many… MANY) flaws, i agree that it was still a net positive cause it legitimized cosplay to the masses (for better or for worse sometimes😅) and since Yaya said it led to all the cosplay materials being created/sold, then it led to something really great in the end! Was it worth tarnishing reputations and all the mental damaged it caused… uh idk, but it was.. a show! Of all time!

I still love our silly cosplay community through the ups and downs, so thank you Sarah for the video so we can ALL heal and keep making this a better space for all!!💖💖💖

  7. 1:11:03 – His girlfriend goes by Chin Chin? …I hope she was either ahead of her time in memes or that she wasn’t too devastated when she found out the translation for that…

  8. My first con was in 2006, so I remember all of these things happening in real time. As someone who is overweight and has been all my life, it's this type of drama that was going on in the early 2010s that made me quit cosplay until 2021. I can tell you it's night and day now. The community has grown so much.

  9. So as someone from the Kansas City area who regularly attends Planet Comicon, the whole “go home out of towners” thing is insane and definitely did not happen. People come to that event from all over the country and we (locals) are fully aware of that.

  10. Okay, so, no hate. No hate at all. My gods it is really difficult to tell all these women apart. They all look the same!

  11. It’s crazy how I’m finding all of this out about the show but when I was watching it as a kid, this was legit my favorite fucking show. I was still in love with it. It reminded me of face off.

  12. I watched this show as it came out, and it fucked with me and still does a little. I have been over 200lbs for over 10 years and don't feel comfortable cosplayjng characters because I am plus size and not the proper size for these characters. So I became a designer and dress up my friends and make sure they are beautiful and like the characters they want to be. I am lucky that I have an amazing partner that is helping my gain the confidence to cosplay the characters I want to cosplay

  13. I’ve watched this at least 5 times. I have never seen any real critique or analysis or updates about this show in as satisfying a format as possible. Thank you for creating my favorite video of the year. 🎉

  14. I've always loved cosplay and idolized cosplayers and the craftsmanship, and I remember first hearing about this show and was SO SO excited. Then I watched it. I was BEYOND disappointed. I never made it past the 2nd episode.

  15. About Rikki "Riddle" Lecotey:
I met her as a guest in 2013 at a convention in Chile, around 6 months after the first season aired. At that time, the conventions weren't that big and it was more accesible to interact with any guest. And I have to say, her and her husband were really nice and always available for a picture, chat or craftmanship advice, to a point not leaving her booth for hours! And she got along with the other cosplay guests in her stay.
However, as soon as someone mentioned the show, their eyes ROLLED as a sign of "oh crap, not that…" and leave the topic there.
As a gift, I gave her a golden leather material I had. She used that material on her Ashe cosplay and even mentioned in her comments on her FB page. She gives credit in anyway posible.

  16. Yo some of us have more cosplay experience than those heroes. I remember watching it back in the day. Team ATL especially Monika disappointed me. Im a plus sized cosplayer that can't stand the fat shaming. I'm also handicapped. Shame me on that and you know where you're going lol it's have been nice if there was more diversity in the case. I preferred syf😢y's cosplay nelee. It was just their cosplayers competing against each other and showing off their cosplay. Plus there was more diversity too.
I can't wait to see Sarah Spaceman at momocon 's 20th anniversary next year!!!!

  17. I'm so glad I found this video! This did definitely help me rethink and overcome long held biases I had back when this came out. I was in my early 20s and I'm glad this reminded me to check myself. ALSO IT SEEMS LIKE YOU ARE A GA COSPLAYER AND I MISS MY HOME CONS!!!

  18. If I had watched this show when it came out I think I would have gotten into cosplay contests because of it which shows you there's a need and power to exposure but I can also tell from your (incredible) breakdown it did not service the cosplay community and created a lot of misconceptions.

Also being a dumb teen at the time I would have been team Carl just because they're a cutie patootie.
