      Speaking as an alumni of the college con in the second story, I can help explain some of its issues.

      The con is run/hosted by several a board put together by several of its nerd clubs working in conjunction. The problem is, eventually they graduate and then the baton is passed on to the next person on. Sometimes thats a smooth transition, sometimes it isn't. It especially isn't when theres a global pandemic that happened a short while ago and also the college keeps upping the rules on what the con can and can't do.

      The college has made it so that minors must be accompanied by a parent- an older sibling won't cut it. Has to be a parent or guardian. As a con greatly dependent on teenagers, or families, that did a number on it. I myself stepped back from going when this rule went into play because I suddenly couldn't attend with my younger brother who was a minor at the time. And obviously they couldn't help the construction smh.

      Some years, this con runs amazingly and is probably the best one in the area. Other years, not so much. I personally have put a lot of my own sweat blood and tears into helping it along and one year supervised in some way about 12 panels including the cosplay contest. Where we had nice trophies but couldn't afford any fancy prizes because we're all poor college kids on a limited school provided budget. Our judges weren't 'professional' cosplayers but were local personalities who had decent followings on social media. Granted that was almost a decade ago now and back then at least, only unreachables like Yaya Han was a professional cosplayer.

      A college con isn't meant to be katsucon or NYCC or any other big fancy con, its just a fun local place to meet other nerds. For a lot of people, myself included, these small college cons are the first cons they go to and their first real experience in fandom and cosplay. Treat them as such.

      Worst con story I got would be [REDACTED]con in 2021, right after the pandemic. Somehow, we ended up double booked at the same time as these baseball kids. They and their parents were just. Total fucksticks. Yelled slurs at everyone, tried to break into the dance party, sexually harrassed several people including me, they bullied a vendor, put a bottle under someone's car seemingly to give it a flat, possibly also threw a baseball at a car, blocked the road into the hotel…

      anyway they got blacklisted by the hotel =D

      I went to momocon by accident once about 10 years ago when I was visiting a friend at GA tech. Went with her to check her mail and saw a bunch of cosplayers, she was like wtf is this? and I was like they are my people. Im pretty sure momo was still free that year but we didn't really stay. Now I voulonteer for the con.

      13:30 I am 99.99% sure I was also in the contest as this couple! honestly they was so much more horror to this con and I'm sorry to hear about the stress but I have to say this adorable proposal was a huge highlight for me they were super cute!

      The first story reminds me of how at a cosplay contest a Ruby cosplay (from RWBY) spinned her scythe and it fell apart mid spin. I saw her backstage practicing so i felt so bad and so did everyone else near the end of the line as we consulted her while she was freaking out

      I remember my third con. I was Dobby from Harry Potter. I was in nothing but a dirty torn up pillow case… and flip flops. I had shot tilt done latex ears and nose that was done by my (ex) friend. At the end of the con I wound up freezing cold and with a brown. Flip flop cause I am clumsy……

      Side note I still have that pillow case XD it was also super worth it cause I got to meet a decently well known author at the time.

      Hey Sarah – a german here. Our legeal drinking age actually depends on the alcohol you consume. For beer and wine its actually 16, for everything else its 18. And if you are between 16-18 you have to be home by 12pm. After that its not allowed.

      My cosplay horror story happened the first time I cosplayed as a woman. Now I've cosplayed for over 10 years but I normally only cosplay as men. I was no longer a minor only by a year and I wanted to brave wearing a more revealing outfit than my standard fully covered bearded dwarf cosplays and I chose to cosplay Nami from One Piece beacuse she's a badass and her outfit is really easy to put together. I was wearing her post-timeskip outfit which is just a simple pair of heels, jeans, a bathing suit top, and a LONG curly red wig. (IMO it is not her most revealing outfit but) I still made sure my parts stayed covered for the con. Looking back the vast majority of people didn't openly stare at me or give me dirty looks or try to touch me but there was one guy that I still remember and I'm still creeped out by. I remember I was alone walking to the dealers room, and at this convention theres a really long hallway that leads you to another host hotel that holds the dealers room. I wasn't really paying much attention to my surroundings because I was fumbling to get my badge ready to show to the security that was letting us into the next hotel when a young man came up to me. It was a really quick interaction, he was probably only a year or two older than me and I noticed he was in regular clothes (which happens all the time at cons) so I wasn't immediently fazed and he asks to take a selfie with me (still not weird). I agree, and as we're moving along in this constantly moving line, I stop fumbling with my bag for just a moment to squeeze myself into the frame and smile for the picture. My mind is a bit of a fog and I'm not thinking about the photos as he's taking them. He takes a couple of them and as he does he out right ZOOMS IN ON MY CLEVAGE AND TAKES MORE PHOTOS! (literally my face was no longer in frame, it was just a picture of my chest) By the time it took for my mind to process what he had done he gave a quick 'thanks good-bye!' and was gone through the nearby exit doors. I could only stand there shocked as my mind was reeling with 'did that just happen?' 'did anyone else see that?' 'what do I do?' 'who do I tell?' "did that ACTUALLY JUST HAPPEN!?!'. I'm sad to say I didn't report him. I was alone, tired, it all happened in a blur, and I didn't want to let it ruin my con so I didn't say anything. Thinking back, I do wish I had tried to tell someone either security or staff. Other than that creep, no one else was inappropriate towards me at the con. I've since worn more revealing outfits but now when someone is being weird to me I stand my ground and stop them or I tell someone who can. DON'T FORGET!!! COSPLAY DOESN'T EQUAL CONSENT!!! IF YOU WANT TO TAKE A SEXY PHOTO OF A COSPLAYER ASK!!! SOME SAY YES!! SOME SAY NO!! CONSENT CONSENT CONSENT!!!

      I went to my first con recently (it was the Tokyo game show) and I was too scared my dad would embarrass me so I just went in regular clothes but I still had a lot of fun

      at my first con (i was 15? 16?), the night i checked in a shoeless sweaty guy in a fedora sniffed me in the elevator and breathed heavily down my neck. yeah.

      Talking about cosplay horror stories featuring boobs, my friend did Merlin from Seven Deadly Sins one year at Otakon. We are waiting in the photobooth area to get our photos taken, when a teenage boy comes up and just motorboats her right in the chest. My friend was a bit too kind to this kid for me because OMG WTF?!

      I love watching AniMeMeMe's random dances on Youtube. The horror story of the performance mix-up is quite understandable, because those random dances have really good dancers. It's hard to believe it isn't some kind of secret dance group instead of a bunch of strangers who just met that day.

      For the first story, i think it was a mistake and it was genuinely not cool of the performers to go up hours after to yell at them, but it was extra uncool of the mom to. That's not okay, especially since maybe she should have been playing bouncer at the stage to prevent this from happening. Con noobs are gonna noob and as a panel runner, its on us to protect our events for the audience sake

      the first story reminds me why i don’t like dancers. so many of them (to my experience) have really bad attitudes and are really mean 😪
